Goldsworthy Tigers win the Black Rock Stakes

The Black Rock Stakes had a record set by Goldsworthy Football Club by winning the race in 5 hours, 41 minutes in 1973

It was an annual event from Goldsworthy to Port Hedland, a 74 mile wheelbarrow race.

Goldsworthy Tigers entered a ten-man team who achieved the record time by changing every 30 seconds.  In the last 17 miles they sprinted an average time of less than 4 minutes a mile – pushing a wheelbarrow.  The average speed was 13 miles per hour over a mostly unsealed road.  Only the last 25 miles was sealed.

An amazing feat by some of the Pilbara’s most talented footballers.

Winning Team: Bob Mitchell, John Butler, ?, Steve Bryson, Mark Clarkson. FR: John Gray, Wally Rodda, ?, Dave Anderson, Lance Paterson.
